Heading away? Keep your home safe while you're gone
If you’re heading away this summer, a few simple steps can help keep your home safe and sound while you’re off enjoying your break.
Lock up & unplug
Check that all doors and windows are locked securely, and that latches or deadbolts are firmly in place. Unplug small appliances and anything with lithium batteries — such as e-bikes, scooters, or power tools — to reduce fire risk and save power while you’re away.
Lights, mail & mates
If you have a light timer, set it to turn lights on in the evening so your home looks lived in. Ask a friend or neighbour to collect your mail or courier parcels so they don’t pile up, as this can be a clear sign that no one’s home.
Fresh start on return
Before you leave, empty rubbish bins and clear out any leftover food from the fridge or pantry. Wipe benches and sinks, and leave the property clean and tidy — you’ll thank yourself when you return to a fresh, welcoming home instead of unwanted smells or pests.
Longer trips
If you're a tenant and you're going to be away for an extended time, it’s a good idea to let your property manager know your dates in case anything urgent arises while you’re gone.
A few minutes of preparation now means you can switch off, unwind, and enjoy your summer knowing your home will be just as you left it when you get back.
