Keep it flowing: Cleaning heat pump filters and extraction fans

Your heat pump and extraction fans work hard to keep your home warm, dry and ventilated but they need a bit of care to stay effective. Regular cleaning helps prevent moisture buildup, keeps energy costs down, and ensures your home stays healthy and comfortable.

Heat pump filters

If your heat pump isn’t pushing out much air, it could be a sign the filter is clogged. As a general rule, you should clean the filter every 8 to 12 weeks depending on how often it’s used.

How to clean it:

  • Open the front panel of the indoor unit
  • Remove the filters
  • Vacuum them gently or rinse under warm water
  • Shake dry and reinsert once fully dry.

If you're unsure how to do it or want to check what’s expected, try searching online using your heat pump’s brand name; many manufacturers have easy video guides and cleaning tips available. A quick clean can help lower power bills and keep your home more comfortable.

Bathroom extraction fans

Bathroom fans help remove steam and moisture, but dust build-up can reduce their effectiveness.

To clean a bathroom fan:

  1. Turn off the power at the switch or fuse box
  2. Remove the fan cover (most pop off or are held by spring clips)
  3. Wash the cover in warm soapy water
  4. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently clean dust from the motor and housing
  5. Wipe fan blades with a damp cloth
  6. Let all parts dry completely before reassembling.

Kitchen rangehood filters

Kitchen fans collect grease and need regular cleaning to stay effective. A greasy filter can impact airflow and reduce performance.

How to clean a rangehood filter:

  • Remove the metal filter
  • Soak in hot, soapy water or a degreasing solution
  • If your manufacturer allows it, you can run it through the dishwasher
  • Let it dry completely before reinstalling.

A little effort with your filters and fans goes a long way toward creating a healthier, more comfortable home. Most cleaning tasks are simple and well-documented, just Google your appliance brand for easy instructions.
