Tenants - are you insured if a fire happens in your rental?
Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are on the rise and most are due to damaged batteries, overnight charging, or using cheap knock-off chargers.
Phones, vapes, e-scooters, toys - if it charges, it can overheat.
To protect yourself (and your stuff), here’s what to do:
- Always use the original charger that came with your device
- Never use or charge devices on beds, couches or under pillows. This includes your phones and laptops
- Avoid overnight charging or leaving things plugged in unattended
- Avoid charging e-scooters or e-bikes inside. Charge them in a garage or run the charging cord outside to a designated charging location
- Replace damaged batteries and cords immediately.
Important: If a fire happens, your landlord’s insurance will not cover your personal belongings. Talk to your insurer about contents cover to make sure you’re protected.
A few simple habits can keep you and your home safe.
